discus fish diseasesDiscus Fish Diseases can cause a lot of harm to your delicate discus fish.  Most fish will catch a disease some time in their life and as a discus fish owner you should be aware of the common diseases that they can catch.

There are two types of diseases that your fish will catch; internal and external diseases.  I will be revealing the top 6 internal and external diseases that your discus fish may get.

Aluminum Toxicity – External Discus Fish Diseases

Aluminum toxicity is caused when there is an ammonia buildup in the tank.  You must check the pH level of the water.  Your tank should maintain at a level between 5.5 and 7.  To make sure that your tank is at the appropriate levels, you should purchase a pH test kit from your local pet store.  If ammonia levels are off it can affect their gills and their breathing.  Some common signs are swollen gills and loss of appetite.

Parasites – External Discus Fish Diseases

Parasites can invade your tank when you purchase new discus fish and put them directly into your tank without quarantine them.  You should always look at your fish and make sure that they don’t have any worms attached to them.  The worms make wounds on the fish and the open wound can get bacterial infections.  To eliminate the disease, you can add salt to the water and use potassium permanganate dips

Fungal Infections – External Discus Fish Diseases

Fungal infections can easy infect your discus if they have any wounds.  If your discus is infected with a fungal infection, you will be able to see the attachments on the fish.  They appear to look like soft cotton.  If you have found parasites in the tank and your fish has wounds, it is a very good chance that your fish will catch a fungal infection.  Add salt to the tank to heal your fish and make sure that your aquarium water is clean.

White Spot Infections (Ich) – External Discus Fish Diseases

Another discus fish diseases to be on the lookout for is white spot.  This disease is very popular and contagious to the all the fish in the aquarium.  If you notice blisters on the skin and gills and swollen gills, your fish can be infected with white spot infections.

Hole in the Head – Internal Discus Fish Diseases

Hole in the head is a discus fish diseases that appears to be holes around the head.  This is a very dangerous disease that can be fatal to your fish.  After catching this disease, your fish can easily catch bacterial infections.  If you notice small holes around the head and the front you can give them Metronidazole to treat hole in the head.

Tapeworms – Internal Discus Fish Diseases

This is another common internal discus fish diseases that your fish can get.  Once infected, your fish is open to other diseases because the system becomes weak.  If you see internal worms on the skin you can use Praziquantel to treat the disease.

There are a lot of disases that will affect your discus fish.  Some discus fish diseases can be prevented with clean water and the proper pH levels.
